Must-try sweet and savoury pastries across the city
Who ate all the pies? You, in a minute, probably. There’s nothing like a piping hot pie to remind you of home – whether scoffing one down on match day or getting spoiled at your yayá’s house. Luckily Dubai has some cracking pastry offerings that you can sink your teeth into, because what’s life without slabs of carb-encased meat (and a touch of heartburn)? Bring on the pies! And these are all fully enclosed in pastry – stews with puffy lids need not apply…
Beef pudding at The Lion by Nick & Scott The meatiest of pies served with mash and real beef gravy. It’s nothing short of wondrous and we want to eat as many as we can. Cheese pie at Public Café Known as 'tiropita' in Greek, this pie actually looks more like a Danish pastry as it has a flatter, twisted pastry design. Of average size, we expect to still be hungry afterwards but it turns out to be incredibly filling. Served warm, the flaky, crumbly pastry is stuffed with a generous amount of feta cheese. The cheese is pleasingly gooey, not at all greasy and the perfect accompaniment to the light, crispy pastry. Also available here is the "spanakopita", or spinach pie. Dhs13. One Lake Plaza, Cluster T, Jumeirah Lakes Towers (04 451 9670).
Chicken and vegetable pie at Crown & Lion This is made from tender chicken chunks with diced vegetables in a rich poultry gravy – and is dairy and gluten-free. Savoury minced beef pie at Couqley Thought you’d waved goodbye to savoury mince pies when you said your emotional farewell to Greggs? Well think again. Chicken pie at Senara There are definitely worse places you can scoff down a pie than at this yacht-side restaurant on the Palm. It’s known mostly for its seafood, but the pie of the day could give the rest of the menu a good run for its money. The latter of these is composed of mounds of organic roasted pecans and lashings of maple syrup tucked inside a flaky butter crust with a scoop of vanilla ice cream perched atop.
