Margot Robbie (see below) may have sucked up much of the oxygen around the chat for this year’s Best Actress Oscar, but I, Tonya isn’t the only based-on-a-real-story movie of a disgraced winter sports star that’ll be in the running come March.
For as much as Molly’s Game may sound like the kind of tale only Hollywood could dream up, it’s actually one rooted very much in reality. Little wonder screenwriting legend Aaron Sorkin, whose impeccable rat-a-tat dialogue birthed The West Wing and whose “You can’t handle the truth!” Jack Nicholson vs Tom Cruise one-two burned A Few Good Men into cinema history, chose it to make his directorial debut.
Background aside, this is Jessica Chastain’s movie, her turning in another barnstormer as Molly Bloom, an Olympic-class skier whose illegal sideline running dodgy high-stakes joints made her a target for the FBI. It’s a dream role and, quite frankly, she smashes it. Mark Dinning
