The sound of bowling pins being clattered is one that is both unmistakable and instantly striking (if you’ll pardon the pun). And, once you’ve navigated your way through the art-deco hallway lining the 44th floor of The Westin Dubai Al Habtoor City, that sound is probably the first thing you’ll notice before you’ve even arrived at the trendy, and sparklingly new, sports bar The 44.
Preceeded by fellow new additions Babiole (a trendy Mediterranean spot) and DOME (a twice-weekly nightclub), The 44 brings some refined, slightly edgy, and definitely cool vibes to Dubai. Serving something of a niche in the city, its two bowling lanes obviously dominate – not only in their central location in the bar, but also the sheer volume of it. In fact, we’d go so far as to say that if you’re not playing, the relentless clattering and smashing gets rather tiresome rather quickly.
That said, there is a lot to love about this laid-back bar. Waiters wearing old saloon-style waistcoats and pocket watches – how very on trend – are very attentive and friendly. Meanwhile there are two brand-new pool tables and a row of dart boards given their own designated space (thankfully).
Outside, a sprawling terrace area offers a second bar for those seeking respite from the bowlarama mania inside. Green leather sofas and very East End London decorations (think cats with moustaches and gorillas with monacles) kit out this cool bar, which picks up on a Thursday night. There’s also a decent happy hour offering 50 percent off from 4pm until 8pm daily. And if the fact it’s the world’s highest bowling alley isn’t enough to get you here, those deals should.
The bottom line A noisy, but otherwise very cool, hangout.
